Listen in. First, Lord Byron visited the Rhine, followed by William Turner. The director of the Siebengebirgsmuseum explains how important they both were for the history of tourism in the Siebengebirge and for romantic landscape art.

The Siebengebirgsmuseum has now been located in the baroque town house between Kellerstrasse and Klotzstrasse since 1934. The house was commissioned by Johann Peter Meurer, the owner of a stonemason company, in 1732 as Königswinter’s first inn. It is obvious that Meurer was a wealthy man – the front, which can be seen from Kellerstrasse, is both noble and elegant and Meurer used Wolkenburg stone for the facades. A chronogram above the entrance indicates the year of construction.

The Siebengebirgsmuseum is a regional museum which houses collections on the geology, history and culture of the region, as well as the museum library of the Heimatverein Siebengebirge (local heritage society). After a two-year restructuring phase within the framework of the “Regionale 2010” festival, the house is now a specialist museum which focusses on Rhine romanticism, Rhine tourism and the history of the landscape in the Siebengebirge. The museum also offers hikes and excursions along the Rhine and in the Siebengebirge.
